Ode to an Inmate

by G. Jack Urso

i remember robert vick

child of a city's sick

he paid the heavy price of justice

a world no poorer, just one less

he took a bullet and in the sky

i saw his name as the autumn flocks

flew on by

i remember robert vick

reminded of what he lacks

the poor boy just fell through the cracks

befriended by dealers who get their kicks

with gangsters, players, and whores

whose babies grow up into convicts

he learned the hard way you can never go home

'cause when he did he got shot to the bone

the laws that made you didn't want to save you

so, please forgive me robert vick

but when i think of you

i just get sick
